Why Reviews Are Essential to help create a Billion Dollar Exit strategy.
Many people believe it was the viral video that propelled Michael Dubin and Dollar Shave Club to success, eventually leading to the company’s $1 billion acquisition by Unilever. While the video definitely played a role in the company’s visibility, it wasn’t the only factor.
Yes, the video was clever and entertaining, but what really built trust with consumers were the reviews and testimonials about the razors themselves.
At the time, Gillette was selling premium razors at a high price. But when customers began leaving positive reviews about Dollar Shave Club’s affordable razors, it changed the perception that cheaper options couldn’t compete. These reviews convinced people that a razor costing just a few dollars could stand up to Gillette’s $30 counterparts.
Dubin spent the first 6 months, from the launch of the website, connecting with bloggers to help them spread the word. And this helped them get their first 1,000 subscribers, without spending anything on marketing. He sent the bloggers he connected with free razors to “test drive,” only asking for an honest review of the razor in return.
Later he made the video and it went viral. The video helped spread the word, but it was the solid base of initial customer feedback that validated the product’s effectiveness. Like many others, when I saw the video for the first time, I checked the reviews, and they provided the “proof” I needed. Link to the original video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZUG9qYTJMsI
Now, as Dollar Shave Club has grown into a major brand, they no longer emphasize reviews in the same way. However, back in the early days, those reviews were critical to building customer trust.
For your potential clients to make a confident purchasing decision, your reviews need to support their buying intent.
